Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present the exhibition, ROMARE BEARDEN: Unique and Rare Prints, on view from May 19 through July 14, 2007.

Jerald Melberg Gallery has exhibited the work of Romare Bearden (1911-1988) since 1983. Considered the American master of collage, Bearden has been the subject of over 40 museum exhibitions including retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Mint Museum in Charlotte, and the National Gallery in Washington, DC.

Throughout his life, Bearden depicted many rituals and social customs of twentieth century rural Black America. The images of spiritual ceremonies, baptisms and burial, industrial hardships, musical arrangements and daily life are themes most frequently associated with the artist. Additionally, the artist was well known for his inventive printmaking. This exhibition focuses on unique variations of editioned work, monoprints and collagraphs, as well as editioned work rarely found in the marketplace. The gallery has spent over two years gathering the twenty works for this exceptional exhibition.
