Nina Liu and Friends in Charleston, SC, Features Group Figurative Exhibit

Nina Liu and Friends in Charleston, SC, prepares for the upcoming festival season with an exhibition of figurative art entitled Go Figure. Featuring works by several artists in a number of different media and styles, Go Figure will include drawings, sculptures, and paintings by many of the gallery's most popular artists. The exhibition will be on view from May 4 through June 30, 2007.

Eric Longo uses pastels to address the nude human figure with delicacy and grace. The blocky forms of ceramic sculptures by Longo's wife Suzanne recall the work of Henry Moore, but their small scale belies their massive appearance. Janet Kozacheck and Carol Pittman work with mosaics and tile to explore design and pattern within the exhibition's theme.

Ceramicist Jeri Burdick's mixed media assemblages feature her expressionistic take on natural forms that is both humorous and sophisticated. Britta Cruz's delicate porcelain figures are a perfect foil for Priscilla Hollingsworth's work. Combining clay, copper, and found objects, Aggie Zed creates complex compositions that elaborate on ideas that appear in her drawings and lead one to consider the realms of dream and fantasy.

Fantasy of another variety is prominent in Cynthia Tollefsrud's witty, brightly colored oils of "musclemen". Michael Farrar uses delicate oil washes and watercolors to create images through which he explores the human form alternately with humor and empathy. Mana Hewitt's etched copper figures in architectural settings refer to the classical tradition while Steven Hewitt's cast glass "Venus" fetishes look to the forgotten past for inspiration.

Go Figure will feature work by an artist whose work is new to the gallery. Mary Ann Prak's abstract clay sculptures are reminiscent of work by modern masters Picasso and Kandinsky.
