Smith Killian Fine Art in Charleston, SC, will present an exhibition of works by Kevin Beers, on view from May 4 - 18, 2007.
Beers grew up in the Hudson Valley, an area with a rich history of landscape painting. He has since expanded his stomping grounds to include Monhegan Island off the coast of Maine.
An invitation to participate in an exhibit at Smith-Killian last December brought the New York-based painter to Charleston. Beers found much in common with his summer residence on Monhegan Island. "This is the perfect place to have a winter version of my summer experience," says Beers. "The heavy tropical light, the exotic palmetto trees, the narrow streets, gorgeous architecture everywhere you turn, Charleston has something inspiring to paint."
In March, Beers returned to the Lowcountry to paint the landscape, from downtown landmarks to shrimp boats to the abandoned cars of rural back roads. These twenty paintings balance the spontaneity of the plein air technique with the controlled development of studio time as the saturated colors and bold geometric shapes play off the light and shadow unique to this area.
