McColl Center for Visual Art in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Junichiro Baba & Thom O'Connor

The McColl Center for Visual Art in Charlotte, NC, will present the exhibition, Context Light: Sculpture by Junichiro Baba and Digital Pigment Prints by Thom O'Connor, on view from May 9 through June 28, 2008.

"Thom O'Connor observes the abstracting and transforming moment his eye sees through the lens of the camera. The work is about revealing," said Rob Williams, the exhibition Curator. "Junichiro Baba imagines a place where direct light is hidden but remembered. The viewer must choose the context in which to 'see' the work."

Junichiro Baba, a former resident artist at Penland School of Crafts currently lives and teaches in Tokyo. His work uses casts forms to solidify his "memory of shadows." Baba's aesthetic images, particularly Japanese, capture shadows evoking concerns about man's connection to nature.

Thom O'Connor: is a master printmaker with works in collections all over the world including Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Rijksakademie Museum in Amsterdam and the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad. In this new body of work, O'Connor uses the camera to capture dramatically illuminated everyday objects, exploring techniques from computer manipulation and non-traditional technologies to eloquently reveal content.

McColl Center for Visual Art is an artists' residency program and gallery dedicated to promoting contemporary art and supporting artists regionally, nationally and internationally. The Center's goal is to present art and artists in a way that engages and enriches the public while revealing the creative process through open studios, outreaches, community projects, and educational programs.
