Center for Craft, Creativity & Design in Hendersonville, NC, Exhibits Chairs

The Center for Craft, Creativity & Design in Hendersonville, NC, will present the exhibit, Are Chairs Just for Sitting, guest curated by Wayne Raab, on view from May 5 through Aug. 14, 2009. This exhibition features works by 24 accomplished furniture makers living mostly in the Western North Carolina region.

Wayne Raab offers the following about the exhibit: "Western North Carolina has a rich history of furniture making and chairs being just one of the functions a furniture designer/maker might produce. This exhibition however is not about the history, but more about what is currently produced with a nod to history. The contemporary designer, craftsman, or artist has come from a variety of backgrounds. Some are self-taught, some have apprenticed with a 'master' and some have taken the academic route and have attended colleges and universities. Their inspiration for what they produce is as varied as their background. Some explore function or is it comfortable, some start with the material they choose to work with, some have exceptional technical skills, and some have their own unique design or art language to express themselves with."

"So chairs are not just about sitting and comfort but as much about the artist/designer/maker and their personal expression in their work," adds Raab.

As a teacher, recently retired as Chair of the Woodworking program at Haywood Community College, and a woodworker himself, Raab will give a Gallery Talk on May 14, 2009, at 6pm.
