Redux Contemporary Art Center and Blue Bicycle Books in Charleston, SC, Offers Exhibit Inspired by Books

Eight local writers and visual artists will show their original, handmade artists’ books on Sunday, June 2, from 2 to 5pm in Charleston, SC, at an exhibition entitled Lowcountry Artists’ Book Meet. The event is free and the public is encouraged to attend. This one-day exhibition will take place at two venues located in close proximity to one another, Blue Bicycle Books, located at 420 King Street and Redux Contemporary Art Center, located at 136 St. Philip Street. The eight participants are Sarah Bandy, Tina Hirsig, Kit Loney, Bette Mueller-Roemer, Kristi Ryba, Susan Finch Stevens, Lillian Trettin, and Mary Walker. Light refreshments will be served.

The artists involved work in a variety of media, including ceramics, drawing, painting, mixed media, and printmaking. Their works range from collaborative sketchbooks, handmade journals with ceramic covers, and hand-bound volumes of poetry, to art objects with book-like qualities. Some books have developed over time, or as part of large-scale projects. Some represent experim™ents with the book form. This one-day exhibition complements an exhibit of altered book sculptures by national and international artists titled Rebound: Dissection and Excavations in Book Art at the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston.
