Stokes County Arts Council in Danbury, NC, Feature works by James Harold Jennings

The Stokes County Arts Council in Danbury, NC, will feature a retrospective exhibit of the life and work of James Harold Jennings during the month of June. SCAC offers this exhibit in an attempt to memorialize one of Stokes County's greatest artists. Various private collectors and galleries have loaned SCAC pieces of Jennings work for this special exhibit. A limited number of pieces will be offered for sale. SCAC board president, Mark Hampton, and board members Carolyn Landreth and Phil Newsome will curate this exhibit with assistance from SCAC executive director, Cindy Tuttle.

Mark Hampton describes Jennings work in this way, "James Harold has been hailed as a highly prolific folk artist, with works hanging in the Smithsonian, and numerous private collections around the world. "Red", as some knew him, utilized wood and paint to create hilarious and downright cool pieces. One of his favorite themes revolved around women in skirts, or Tough Girls sitting on men, sometimes as self-portraits. These are among the most humorous of James Harold's work, typically with titles like; Amazon Women, Tough Women, and Billy gets sat on. Using scraps of wood from just about anywhere, some of Jenning's work features engineering feats such as moving pieces. One such piece James Harold and Elvis features a hand crank which allows James Harold to strum guitar with a banjo playing Elvis. Once again, this stuff is downright cool, always sporting bright colors with trademark scenes."
