Juried Craft Show and Sale in Bluffton, SC

The Lowcountry Craft Show, a juried show and sale, was held at the Heyward House Historic Center on Boundary Street from May 17-20. Sponsored by the South Carolina Artisans Center in Walterboro, The Coastal Discovery Museum of Hilton Head, and the Heyward House in Bluffton, this show featured some of South Carolina's finest craft artists.

The show was a featured event of "Bravo-Celebrate the Arts" and was held in partnership with the Hilton Head Island Chamber of Commerce. Categories for entry included wood, metal, glass, baskets, clay, fiber, mixed media, paper, and jewelry. Linda Warner Constantino of Hilton Head Island was the juror for the show.

Judith Hughes and Lucy Scardino of Bluffton were the co-chairs of the event. Scardino first suggested the idea of a juried show about two years ago when the month-long arts celebration was in the early planning stages. "It's been exciting to see the idea grow into a fully formed public event," she said.

Cash awards totaling $850 were given to Best Of Show, First Place, and Second Place. A special Preview Party was held on May 17 and got the show off to a flying start. "We wanted to do something that would be fun and affordable," said Hughes. "So, for a $10 donation folks could hear jazz and blues played by The Project, a local group, have some wine and snacks, and mingle with the artists."

The Heyward House Historic Center is Bluffton's main tourist attraction, according to Robert Jones, executive director. "The House is Bluffton's official welcome center and received almost 2,000 visitors last year," he said.
