Myersart Gallery/Clay on Camden in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Dean Reganess

Myersart Gallery/Clay on Camden located in Charlotte, NC's SouthEnd, will debut works in limestone, carerra marble, and granite by stone carver Dean Reganess. The exhibit opens on June 6 and continues through June 30, 2003.

Born in Battlecreek, MI, Reganess has worked in stonemasonry for over a decade. "As a young stonemason I was always enthralled with the art of stone carving, but I never had the opportunity to attempt it," the artist said. While traveling through Ireland in the summer of 2001, Reganess met a master stonecarver who gave him his one and only lesson. Since then he has worked on finding his own style.

"I began to understand the personality of the stone. I realized its weaknesses and strengths. It is a bitterly hard and unforgiving medium, but full of life and beauty unlike any other," says Reganess.

Reganess is a direct carver, which means he does not work from models or sketches. Most of the time when he begins carving, he is unaware what will emerge from the stone. Reganess does not believe in relying on machinery. He feels one is more in touch with the material when creating by hand. He says he draws inspiration from ancient sources, including Celtic scrollers and Pictish and Norse art.
