Summertime at Somerhill! at Chapel Hill, NC's Somerhill Gallery

Somerhill Gallery announces a fourperson exhibition titled Summertime at Somerhill! The exhibition will feature recent artwork by artists Beth Goldston, Laura Duis, Wendy Morrison Painter, and Susan Brady. The exhibition is on display from June 8 - July 5.

Beth Goldston

With a Bachelor of Arts degree from Meredith College, North Carolina landscape artist Beth Goldston has been the recipient of many juried show awards. Among her awards are: Best in Show at the August Art in the Park Exhibition, First Place at the Alamance County Arts Council's 42nd Regional Arts Competition, and the Jurors Award of Excellence from the Chatham County Arts Council's 7th Annual Open Studio Tour.

Pastel artist Beth Goldston reveals, "Like many artists before me, I am intrigued with the effects of light and atmospheric conditions on the landscape. My goal is to express my responses to the various times of day and the changing seasons." Goldston continues, "My work speaks of my reverence for the land and I hope it will make an eloquent, lasting statement about where I live and what I live for."

Laura Duis

Born in Ohio, North Carolina, watercolor artist Laura Duis chooses her imagery from subjects that surround her daily life. The abstracted realism of her paintings reflect a background in design and illustration as well as a desire to create an identifiable style for herself. Duis simplifies, streamlines, and often exaggerates the elements of her composition. Large blocks of pure color invoke a feeling of vibrant whimsy inviting the viewer to join in a celebration of summertime life.

At Bowling Green State University in Ohio, Laura Duis graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in art education, as well as studying at the School of Advertising Art in Dayton, Ohio. Her work has been exhibited at galleries in both Ohio and North Carolina. Duis has been involved in many group exhibitions, such as the Watercolor Society of North Carolina's 54th SemiAnnual Exhibition, The Charlotte Art League Spring and Fall Exhibitions, and the Charlotte Artists' Society National Bank Show. Laura Duis' artwork can be found in collections at the Kettering Medical Center in Ohio, the Richmond Art Museum in Indiana, and the Hospice of Dayton in Ohio.

Wendy Morrison Painter

When describing her own abstract artwork, Wendy Morrison Painter feels strongly that her paintings act as a catalyst, helping to shed light on some of life's fundamental questions. "The paintings have a message of clarity, of energy, a message that will give immediate information about the next step the place, the action. It will also provide information about where you came from, the many places that your soul has been, the path that your soul has followed and where it must go with your participation." Painter's artwork is much more than just aesthetics, it is a "sourcebook, an energetic connection with all that is yours."

Wendy Morrison Painter began her creative endeavors as a child, leading her to a career as a painter of abstract ideas and concepts. While studying for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Architecture at North Carolina State University she focused on painting, pottery, photography, life drawing, and graphics. Painter has been involved in numerous exhibitions throughout North Carolina including Through Women's Eyes, By Women's Hands, the Rocky Mount Arts Center Annual Show, and the Fine Arts League of Cary Annual Juried Show. Her paintings are included in corporate collections such as Central Carolina Bank, SAS Institute, and First South Bank.

Susan Brady

Each of Susan Brady's collaged abstract paintings are glazed with paint and layered with paper, ink, cloth or photographs. Brady collects lists, notes, and secrets discarded or lost by strangers to include in her art. These textures, layers, and depths entice the viewer to enter, to imagine, to reflect, and ponder. Powerful color elements and subtle forms in Brady's collagelike paintings create an ambiance of mystery and intrigue.

Somerhill Gallery Director Joseph Rowand comments, "to discover an artist like Susan Brady is one of those rare occurrences in a directors career, where one can unmistakably recognize an emerging talent. Somerhill is very proud to represent artist Susan Brady." Brady is a North Carolina native with a Master's degree in Architecture from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. She has also earned a Bachelor of Science degree in art from Barton College in Wilson, NC.
