Elder Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Karen Powell and Leandro Manzo

Elder Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present the exhibition, Form and Substance, featuring bronze sculptures by Karen Roberson Powell and colorful paintings by Leandro Manzo. The exhibit which created an exciting and dramatic view of life from two artists' perspectives will be on view from June 3 through July 16, 2005. Manzo of Los Angeles and Powell from North Carolina, have created all new work for their exhibition.

Leandro Manzo

Manzo was born in Argentina in 1969 and is the fourth generation of artists in a family of well-known artisans. The director of the Museum of Visual Arts in Buenos Aires, Aldo Severi, recognized the talent of the young Leandro Manzo and arranged the first exhibition of Manzo's work at the Museum at the age of thirteen.

Manzo's paintings are included in several International public and private collections in Argentina, Sao Paulo, Amsterdam, Barcelona, London, Madrid, Paris, Vienna, Zurich, Mexico City, and Toronto.

Karen Roberson Powell received her MFA at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro in 1988 with a concentration in sculpture. She pursued additional training in Italy, Wales, and England as well as the Academy of Realist Art in Santa Fe, NM, and the Carving Studio in Proctor, VT.

In order to further develop her knowledge of bronze casting Powell apprenticed at the Green Mountain Fine Arts Foundry in Crowley, TX. In 1993 she took a year's leave from her university position to attend the Berllanderi Sculpture Workshop near Cardiff, Wales. While there she was featured on BBC television and radio for her installation at Cardiff Bay for a piece entitled The Voyage.

Professionally, Powell has served as an Associate Professor of Fine Art at the University of Texas at Tyler for ten years where she was Chair of the department. As head of the sculpture program she taught courses in sculpture, life drawing and bronze casting. Powell received the Howard Scholarship in Art while a student at UNCG and also was awarded a teaching assistantship while pursuing her masters degree. She has received awards for her work in juried competitions in Dallas, Georgia and Texas.

Powell's exhibitions have ranged from the United States to Wales and Italy. Her works are in private and corporate collections throughout the United States. She is also included in collections in Wales, Canada and Belgium. She currently is teaching at Warren Wilson College near Asheville, NC.
