SC National Heritage Corridor Offers Exhibit with Barbados Connections in Beaufort, SC, and North Charleston, SC

The South Carolina National Heritage Corridor (SCNHC) is hosting The Connection, a traveling art exhibit created to entertain and educate citizens about the connections between South Carolina and the island of Barbados in the Lowcountry. The two locations on the remaining schedule are the Penn Center in Beaufort, SC, and the North Charleston and American LaFrance Fire Museum and Educational Center in North Charleston, SC.

The Penn Center will host the exhibit from June 1 though July 24, 2008. The North Charleston and American LaFrance Fire Museum and Educational Center will host the exhibition from Aug. 1 through Sept. 15, 2008.

The exhibit consists of over 70 pieces from South Carolina and Barbadian artists representing various media that reflect the similarities between South Carolina and Barbados in the fields of Agriculture, Horticulture, Arts, African American Heritage and Maritime Heritage.

Included with the artwork is an interpretive exhibit highlighting the rich historical and cultural connection still present between the island and South Carolina today. In addition, a lecture series, interpretive programming and receptions are planned at each stop along the SC National Heritage Corridor. Aunt Pearlie Sue and the Gullah Kinfolk Singers have also accompanied the exhibit with performances for the public and at schools located near the exhibiting location.

The exhibit began in Anderson, SC, at the Anderson Arts Warehouse and has since displayed at the Greenwood Arts Center in Greenwood, SC, and the Aiken Arts Center in Aiken, SC. After displaying in North Charleston, the exhibit will then be on its final display on the Island of Barbados at the Sherbourne Conference Center from Oct. 23 - 27, 2008.

As part of the final exhibit, the SCNHC and the Barbados Ministry of Tourism are hosting a Heritage Tourism Symposium to celebrate the shared natural and cultural history. The SCNHC is organizing a trip to Barbados for this special event. Anyone interested in attending the final display on the island should call Elizabeth Harm at 803/644-9733.

The Connection was born out of a partnership developed between the Barbadian Tourism Ministry and the SCNHC to celebrate the historical and cultural connections between the Carolinas and Barbados.
