Flood Gallery Fine Art Center in Asheville, NC, Features Works by Jeff Bell

The Flood Gallery Fine Art Center in Asheville, NC, will present the exhibit, Jeff Bell: The Sled and The Blocks, featuring sculptural works by the artist, on view from June 5 through July 3, 2009.

Bell's work focuses on gathering existing objects, dismantling them and then creating sculptures from those elements. By cutting and shaping, sanding and gluing, drilling and welding, the parts converge and content is merged with the form. The resulting objects then live in the area between the known and the unknown.

In his current body of work, Bell explores issues of functionality and the change that occurs in putting functional objects in a gallery setting. Looking to installations of period furniture and objects, The Sled and the Blocks hints at those types of displays while maintaining consideration for each individual sculpture.

Bell says that his work "allude(s) to a variety of sources and concepts but never too literally. As a result of the decisions I make a tension is created in the work. Ultimately I get at something new but also something that reflects its previous language: a sculpture that at first glance reaffirms assumptions of everyday objects but at further examination resists those notions and lives outside of my understanding. The finished work strives to be both more poetic and allusive."

Bell was born in Goldsboro, NC, and lives and works in Durham, NC. After working for a decade in art museums, including the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, he returned to school. He is a recent MFA graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
