Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, Features Works by Nancy Hughes Miller

Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, will present the exhibit, Here and There: Marshscapes and Seascapes Near Sunset Beach, NC, featuring oil paintings by Cary, NC artist Nancy Hughes Miller, on view from June 1 - July 11, 2009.

The collection consists of just fewer than 20 works depicting the seashore and wetlands of Sunset Beach, where the artist has a second home. "I am so inspired by beauty in the landscape," Miller says, "I'm always seeking to capture a bold yet quiet impression of nature, as the colors of sky, earth and water converge on the horizon."

Sure to be a favorite with both locals and visitors is her painting of the soon-to-be-replaced Sunset Beach Bridge. The historic pontoon-style swing bridge connecting the popular Barrier Island to the mainland is in the process of being replaced by a high rise bridge similar to the one just next door in Ocean Isle Beach. Scenes of the Intracoastal Waterway and the surf at Sunset Beach are also in the collection.

In a telephone interview, Miller said, "I hope my paintings of the area's special beauty conjure up what makes Sunset Beach so alluring. The ebb and flow of tides, the breaking waves, the blues and greens of marsh and sky, the whites of sand dunes and puffy clouds, waiting for the bridge, a salty breeze with a marshy aroma, a promise of relaxation."

Miller grew up nearby in Tabor City, NC. She has spent most of her life involved in creative pursuits. Attending NC State University's College of Design, she also explored studies in life drawing, photography and art history. Following graduation, she embarked on what would become a successful, 25-year career of graphic design. Today Miller divides her time between her two NC homes.

Painting a range of local landscapes, water scenes and vistas of her travels, Miller generally photographs in the field, then does her painting back in the studio, using her own photographs as reference. An oil painter, she prefers to work on canvas that she has underpainted with warm color using brush or palette knife.

Known for simplicity of design, Miller was featured at the Jordan Hall Arts Center in Cary, NC, in Jan. 2009 and Raleigh, NC's Visual Art Exchange (VAE) Gala Live & Silent Auction in Feb. 2009. Other juried shows include the VAE Picture This Exhibition at the Prevent Child Abuse NC Gala in Oct. 2008 and Scope: the North Carolina Landscape, May 2008 and April 2007.

Ginny Lassiter, who owns Sunset River Marketplace with husband Joe, said, "Nancy's paintings are simple and sophisticated. With her skillful handling of color - it's both bold and subtle - she paints a morning in the marsh where you can just about smell the salty air and hear the rustling spartina grass."
