Here's a Carolina Arts Update! 7/22/05

erl originals gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, is now closed. The following is no reflection on the artist(s) mentioned in this article. They still deserve the historical fact that this exhibition happened.

Here is an excerpt from an article in the Winston-Salem Journal's Dec. 10, 2004, edition: "In late September, (2004) erl's owners, Peter and Lee Swenson, and the company they operate, Bogart Management Group, were foreclosed on by their bank. They were barred from their gallery at 480 West End Blvd. for being months in arrears on rent and utilities. Peter Swenson is facing numerous tax-fraud charges, as well as a growing number of civil lawsuits filed by creditors seeking to collect payments they say are long overdue".

e-r-l originals in Winston-Salem, NC, fills Southern Living Ideas House

e-r-l originals in Winston-Salem, NC, has been selected to provide all of the original art for the Southern Living Idea House, Woodleaf, located in Kinderton, a new planned community in Advance, N.C. "We're very excited about being part of this event," Peter Swenson, e-r-l president, says. "It's the third time that Southern Living has selected art from our gallery for an Idea House, and we are the only gallery to date to have provided all of the art for one of these homes. Idea Houses such as Woodleaf provide us with the opportunity to showcase pieces from our large selection of contemporary American paintings and crafts, including pottery and glass."

Among the more than 25 original pieces of art from e-r-l on display in the 4,000-square-foot home are works by, Garrett Speirs, a California artist who paints in oils, egg tempera and gouache. His works have been shown at numerous galleries, among them the Poesuggi Italiani, Theater Arts Gallery in High Point; Plein Tuscany, Morris Gallery in Columbia, SC; the Thesis Exhibition, Cranbrook Museum of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; and the Visual Arts Gallery at the University of Georgia in Athens.

Carolyn Goldsmith, a Florida native who lives and works in Alabama, paints figures in oil on canvas in an unconfined, free style. She exhibits primarily in Alabama, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Georgia where her works are part of numerous corporate collections, such as architects Adams, Peacher, Keeton, Cosby, Inc. in Birmingham; Paul W. Bryant, Jr. Conference Center at the University of Alabama; Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery; and Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta. She has had numerous solo exhibitions, most recently at the Monty Stabler Galleries in Birmingham and Bennett Galleries in Nashville. Her works have also been on display in group exhibitions across George and Alabama.

All of the artwork provided by e-r-l for the Idea House is for sale. The Idea House, which will be open to the public through Sept. 30, features a traditional exterior with an open, spacious floor plan for family living and entertaining. The house will be open to the public Tue. - Sat., from 11am-5pm, and Sun., from 1-5pm. The admission price is $5 per person.
