16 Patton Gallery in Asheville, NC, Features Works by Deborah Squier & Laura Young

"The true purpose of the painter is simply do reproduce in other
minds fine impression which a scene has made on him."
- "George Inness"

At 16 Patton in Asheville, NC, from July 12 through Aug. 31, 2002, there will be an exhibit by artists Deborah Squier and Laura Young. The exhibit, entitled Timeless Landscape will feature pastels and oil paintings.

An exquisite sensitivity to her surroundings and a quiet observation of nature mark Deborah Squier's poetic landscapes. She isolates one moment in time, absorbing that moment with integrity, honesty, passion and heart. Her mastery of execution allows her movement into a timeless sphere where intellect and spirit direct technique. The measured response is a harmonious blending of feeling and sensory integration.

It is this artist's privilege to capture the awe-inspiring and translate it into expressive form. Squier feels intensely and sees simply (the prerogative of an intelligent artist), grasping the essentials with a certainty of value, color transition and form and arranging them into a significant whole. When the relationship between an individual and the land is sacred, the magic of becoming attuned is timeless. Such is the case here.. .Squier's love and expression of nature in her landscape paintings open up vistas of inspiration to the viewer.

Laura Young's intimate, archetypal landscapes are dappled with plays of light and dark movements, scintillating impressionistic colors and rooted in a solid grasp of the fundamentals of form and structure, descriptive of the Iowa farmlands. There is a magical sense of place and feeling to her work, in particular, Early Spring and Broken Fence. One can breathe the grass and hear the chirps of the birds in the underbrush and the rich, deep greens and purples lead up, down and across little bypaths and old sandy roads. As one gazes deeply into the paintings, tile atmosphere appears to drop down engulfing the viewer.

A good work of art does not rest on beauty alone - there is a spirit behind beauty, which is its cause. And Young's spirit is ever present in these meadowlands and forests and quiet nature sanctuaries. Her meticulous, textured application of vital and saturated colors and color harmonies arrange themselves in patterns that are drawn from a close observation of nature but remain distinctly Young's. Tranquility and the elegance of the unencumbered exist within Young's landscapes, asking us to pause, to allow the poetry within us to merge with the poetry in these paintings.

Timeless Landscape offers a continuum in present time. It also invites others to enjoy the view based on what lies within him or her. Join us; come to savor these moments in time, archetypal passages...yours and mine.
