July Issue 2003

Fine Art Collector in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Peter Scala

The Fine Art Collector in Charleston, SC, will feature works by Peter Scala through July 3, 2003.

For twenty years, Peter Scala and his wife traveled and lived in Asia and Africa after joining the Peace Corps. Without fail, every morning Scala produced a daily spontaneous sketch in pen and ink in a journal. Later, the artist sifts through the images carefully to glean ideas for paintings.

Most of the work in this exhibit was created in Africa and Asia, where the artist and his wife lived after joining the peace Corps, yet the work does not graphically describe the cultures in which they lived. Instead, they provide a surrealist's perception to them. Suffering from feverish states of delirium resulting from tropical fevers he contracted in Africa, the artist first began to recreate sensory images of the most basic elements of an experience he recalled. His paintings have a dreamlike quality that is witty, challenging, and provocative. The artist explains that h work requires study to find the human component.

Scala paints in an ardent medium of egg tempera on gesso panel or paper. His motivation to work in this medium was influenced by a visit to Sienna, Italy, where he studied thirteenth century tempera panels. He finds the exacting nature and the cool, soft glow of the medium to be very pleasing.
