Hilton Head Art League on Hilton Head Island, SC, Features Works by Marlies Kaufmann Williams

Artist Marlies Kaufmann Williams will be baring her soul at the Hilton Head Art League Gallery on Hilton Head Island, SC, from July 6 - 31, 2004. Her exhibition titled, Vibrations of the Soul, will include acrylic and collage paintings. Though she works in all mediums, her material of choice is acrylics.

Williams explains her paintings and her love for the Lowcountry like this. "Growing up in the heart of the steel and coal industry during the post WWII era of West Germany, I developed my ability to express myself early in life through art." She met and married an American soldier and moved to the United States in 1964. For 30 years she worked in architecture and construction in Charlotte, NC. In 1997, she moved to St. Helena Island, SC. The Lowcountry, with its changing seasons, "express moods and life's primal power, the inspiration for the art I need to balance my life," she says.

Williams is a self-taught artist, but has recently studied with a number of art instructors, exploring different mediums and techniques. She has found that acrylics best meet her needs for color and workability. She works spontaneously after her ideas are sketched out. "Once an idea materializes in my mind," she says, "I create many different paintings on the same subject, though I do like to work on several different themes at the same time."

The show focuses on two series of work, the Remmi and Immer themes. "I attempt to paint what I feel, reflecting the emotions given to me visually, like the marshes, or mentally, on a deeper soul level. I want to convey the impact the marshes have had on life, their primal nurturing, unforgiving wildness and stark beauty. My abstractions of the marshes are close up and personal." The Remmi series emerged during the birth of her granddaughter, named Remmi, hence the name for this series. The Immer series is related to Remmi. This series focuses on the everlasting - always, forever, the timeless foundation. Says Williams, "I was intrigued when I discovered that the name Remmi spelled backward, is a German word meaning 'always' - a very appropriate title."

The Hilton Head Art League is a not-for-profit membership organization, dedicated to promoting the visual arts in the community and increasing the art skills of its members. The Art League provides numerous art events throughout the year and operates a volunteer-managed art gallery in Pineland Station where the artwork of its members are exhibited and sold.
