Charleston Crafts in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Jill Carway

Charleston Crafts in Charleston, SC, will present an exhibit of works by potter Jill Carway of Summerville, SC. The exhibit will be on view through July 31, 2007.

Carway, at twenty-four, is one of the youngest members of the craft co-op gallery. Her functional pottery has a beautiful balance in the hand. Her pieces are scaled for practical use, but are embellished with appealing decorative elements. Carway's glaze choices fit beautifully in today's decor, and her attention to finishing is exquisite.

Carway says, "Many of my pieces begin with the thought, ' I wish I had ...'.  Just about everything I make is something I would, and often do, use at home myself. Having handmade things, for me is like having little pieces of art I can pick up and use all day long. It can make the simplest parts of each day just a little more interesting."

Carway began her journey as a potter with fellow co-op member, Alison McCauley, several years ago. Study continued with Jim Connell at Winthrop University at Rock Hill, SC, with a degree in ceramics in 2005. Workshops at Penland School of Craft with Catherine White and Shane Mickey added to Carway's knowledge. She recently spent eight weeks there as studio assistant to Master Potter, Cynthia Bringle. Carway plans to continue studying in similar venues as they occur. "I want to continue to grow by learning from as many different people and experiences as I can," she states. "The love of my life in clay is wood and salt fired work. It is a real treat when I have access to the tools and equipment for it."

Carway has established a small studio at her family home, and named it "Silver Pail Pottery," a gentle word play on the nursery rhyme, "Jack and Jill," and her own first name. Carway's family forms a great support system. Her mother, Robin, acts as studio assistant and business manager, while her father, Tim, is busy building her a better, larger studio. Her sister, Maree, getting ready for college, helps where she can.

In her new studio, Carway plans to add some raku firing to her line of glazed white stoneware. She also plans some work in porcelain.

Currently, Carway's work is available at Charleston Crafts Gallery year round. Her fall plans include the "Christmas Classic" show in North Charleston, SC, on Nov. 9-11, 2007, and "Christmas Made in the South" show in Ladson, SC, on Nov. 30 - Dec. 2, 2007.
