July Issue 2008

Bluewood Gallery in Brevard, NC, Features Photography Exhibition

Bluewood Gallery in Brevard, NC, is presenting the exhibit, Landscapes, Waterfalls and Wildlife, featuring works by photographers Bill Lea, Jeff Miller, Bruce Siulinski and Susan Stanton, on view through July 31, 2008. The exhibit will showcase images of the Carolinas.

Bill Lea, of Franklin, NC, has an extensive portfolio of published work and is known for his wildlife photography. More than 6,000 of his photos have been presented in an array of books, calendars, magazines, advertisements and other publications. His images have appeared in many publications including Audubon Calendars, National Geographic books, Nature Conservancy, National Wildlife and Defenders of Wildlife.

Jeff Miller, from Hendersonville, NC, is well-known for his red fox and great blue heron series, as well as for area landscapes. In 2007, Miller had the opportunity to photograph a den of red foxes in Colorado. The resulting series showcases many behaviors of these sleek animals. A favorite image is Ouch, capturing an extraordinary instant when the father helped his kit tend to a nose-full of porcupine quills after an adventuresome encounter. Miller chose to display the series on canvas rather than producing the more traditional framed photograph under glass. "In addition to eliminating glare, the use of the canvas provides a more visible and realistic experience with the subject," says Miller.

Bruce Siulinski, of Brevard, is a Maine native and his photographs in the exhibit capture both the mountains and coastal areas of the Carolinas. He is also a fine woodworker and often complements his images with custom wood frames. His photographs have appeared in several publications including The Laurel of Asheville, North Carolina Wildlife, Southern Arts Journal and Carolina Nature Photographer's  Camera in the Wild

Although Susan Stanton practiced photography from her high school days, it wasn't until 1998, that she became a serious photographer. "As a photographer, I celebrate nature and life through my lens. I find beauty in the small intimate details, richness in the mundane and am humbled by the grandeur of our mountain landscapes." She is an active member of the photography community. Her publishing credits include Our State, The Laurel of Asheville, and Laurel magazines and she has exhibited at the Biltmore Estate and galleries across the region.

Bluewood Gallery is located in downtown Brevard, recently named "Best Arts & Culture Destination for a population under 30,000" by Mountain Homes Southern Style Magazine and "new vibrant art hub" by Blue Ridge Country Magazine. The gallery specializes in fine art photography and offers a variety of other art mediums.
