July Issue 2008

Center of the Earth Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Group Exhibit

The Center of the Earth Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is pleased to present a grouping of vibrant works of five artists to celebrate the season of summer. Carrie McGee, Ruth Ava Lyon, Scott Upton, Kevin Hogan, and Charles Walker will have works in the exhibit, Glow, on view from July 1 through Aug. 30, 2008.

Carrie McGee's mixed media constructions explore variation within repeated forms. Utilizing transparent plastics as a ground, she experiments with natural and chemical processes, such as rust and oxidation, to create luminous works that emanate a meditative pulse. McGee received a Visual Arts Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts/Southern Arts Federation, as well as a residency fellowship from the Christoph Merian Foundation in Basel, Switzerland.

A Fulbright Fellow, Ruth Ava Lyon's paintings can be found in numerous public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Charlotte Convention Center, Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, the Hearst Corporation, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Lyons' work has a biomorphic expression that presents itself through references to the transformative power of nature. Issues of loss, beauty, decay, and redemption are presented through amorphous veils of paint, revealing a strange new landscape.

An abstraction of specific events and subject matter gathered from his own life, Scott Upton uses bold color to express himself forcibly. He works with complementary colors and vibrations of kindred tones and titles that intermingle with the subject. Upton's art is included in the collections of Chase Manhattan, the Knoxville Art Museum, the Umstead Hotel, and the Four Seasons Hotel.

Kevin Hogan is known for his vivacious and provocative prints, paintings and installations and has exhibited extensively in the United States and Europe including the North Carolina Museum of Art. Collections include Neiman Marcus, Kilpatrick Stockton, the Hearst Corporation and the Michener Collection.

Charles Walker is included in the collections of Neiman Marcus, Shurtape Technologies, Wake Forest University, and UNC Chapel Hill. He is primarily interested in the more intangible aspects of the human experience - mood, tone, and the atmospheric nature of how we as humans perceive the world. Through a simple application and repetition of line, color, and texture Walker strives to find the mainline into the human soul shaded by his personal perception.
