Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, SC, Offers Works by Constantine Manos

In 1961, Constantine Manos left for Greece, the home of his parents, and spent three years photographing its people and culture. The result of this effort was A Greek Portfolio, which was published in 1972 and won awards in Arles, France and Leipzig, Germany. Approximately 20 photographs from A Greek Portfolio are on view in the Mamie and William Andrew Treadway, Jr. Gallery 15 at the Museum through Oct. 26, 2008.

A Greek Portfolio represents a spontaneous pictorial account of Manos' travels through rural Greece and the Greek islands. His photographs reveal a warmth and understanding of a way of life that had remained virtually unchanged for centuries, but was destined for extinction as the youth of these small country villages and secluded farms left for the opportunities of the city.

Born in Columbia, SC, to Greek immigrant parents, Manos began his photographic career under the direction of Sadie Cox in the Wardlaw Junior High camera club. He continued to work through his teens as a photographer and eventually graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in English Literature. Later he moved to New York and worked for Life, Esquire, and Look magazines.

Manos' A Greek Portfolio captures a way of life with poignant portraits and images, and the ease in which Manos moved within and among these small communities is a testament to philoxenia (friendship toward the stranger), held sacred by these rural Greek populations.

In addition to the Columbia Museum of Art's collection, his work is included in numerous important collections, among them the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Houston Museum of Fine Arts; and the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris.
