July Issue 2009

Charleston Center for Photography in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Gary Geboy

The Charleston Center for Photography in Charleston, SC, is presenting the exhibit, The Lost, featuring photographic works by Gary Geboy, on view through July 31, 2009.

Geboy is introducing a new photographic series of abstract settings and subjects. The work spans thirty years of haunting images and hidden, forgotten and ignored subjects. They depart from his own dreams and wanderings to arrive in places unfamiliar and difficult to define. For Geboy, the exhibition represents people and places lost to time. The images are understood not by their surroundings or context but by the memories that they suggest.

Geboy has been a photographer for over 30 years. In his earlier days he traveled the world working as a cinematographer for the Peace Corps, producing documentaries in Kyrgyzstan to a National Gallery of Art exhibit on ancient Mexico. All the while creating environmental portraits. His recent work, shows us how he views his own back yard, the Lowcountry.

His work has been seen at the Smithsonian's Rock and Soul Museum in Memphis, TN, the National Park Services visitor center at the Manzanar National Historic Site in California, and the Kings Mountain National Military Park in Blacksburg, South Carolina. Geboy's book of images, Transfer Of Grace, is featured on the international Holga photography website (Holga Inspires.com) and is a finalist for ForeWord Magazine's photography book of the year award.
