WICKWIRE Gallery in Hendersonville, NC, Features Works by John Smith and Jim Carson

WICKWIRE fine art/folk art ". . .where the heart finds art" in Hendersonville, NC, will present the exhibit, F-Stop to Visual Perspective, featuring works by John Smith and Jim Carson, on view from July 3 - 31, 2009.

John Smith

John Smith's interest in photography began when he was fourteen trying to take pictures of the moon by placing a camera over his home built telescope. After high school, a part time photography career turned into a full-time career with the General Electric Company for twelve years. Since leaving GE, he has run his own photo labs. For over thirty years, he has been involved in either taking or printing images.

Smith's Southeastern roots and love of the mountains led him to begin taking landscape pictures in both black and white and color. Then, in 1999 armed with a 4x5 camera, he began photographing the mountains with a broader perspective. His goal was to capture the beauty and majesty of the Western North Carolina mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains on a printed piece of paper.

In 2004, he added 8x10 capabilities to his view camera in order to do big enlargements in both black and white and color with a high level of detail and sharpness. "I want to be able to share my images," says Smith, "for all to understand what it is like to live in such splendor - the kind of splendor as displayed by the four distinctive seasons we enjoy here in the Blue Ridge."

Jim Carson

Jim Carson has been painting in both oil and acrylic for over twenty years. His work has been described by art critics as "fresh and painterly". His work hangs in personal and corporate galleries from California to Florida. Carson prefers painting in "plein air". There is a true simplicity and freshness to his paintings that distinguish them, and give them a character of their own.

For 31 years, Carson was the managing partner in the law firm of Chambless, Higdon and Carson in Macon, GA. During the last 10 years of his practice, he was a certified mediator. He thinks that the resolution of the issues in a mediation can be similar to resolving the problems in a painting. Carson says, "Cutting through to the essence, simplifying, and finding balance work both in painting and mediation."

Although always interested in drawing, even at an early age, Carson's interest in painting lay dormant while law school, marriage, raising a family, and building a law practice took precedent. Two decades ago his wife, Beth gave him a painting course for Christmas, and he has never looked back. This journey culminated in 2003, when he retired from law practice, moved to Saluda, NC, and now paints full time.

Carson loves a quote from Pablo Picasso, "Art is the elimination of the unnecessary." His paintings reflect his effort to master that principle. His focus is to simplify shapes in the landscape and apply the paint quickly and confidently. Consequently, there is a true simplicity and freshness to his paintings that distinguish them, and give them a character of their own.
