Hendersonville, NC, Galleries Feature Work of Jean Hough

Two new art galleries in historic downtown Hendersonville, NC, have named local artist, Jean Hough as Artist of the Month for August. An exhibit of her original paintings is on display in the galleries located one block off Main Street in downtown Hendersonville. The galleries are a cooperative venture featuring the original works of 20 local artists.

Hough is a realist who paints beautiful pastoral landscapes. She excels as a skilled draftsman, and she applies paint with meticulous attention to detail. Her method of blending color achieves the ultimate in rich and vibrant tones. Throughout this exhibit, Hough's paintings demonstrate her passionate love of nature and her deep concern for the environment. Her lyrical scenes convey a sense of peace and serenity, while delivering a strong message which draws the viewer into the artist's world.

Hough's subject matter is identifiable and familiar, and her paintings evoke in the viewer the desire to interact with nature and to preserve its essence. An outstanding example of Hough's work is a painting of a peaceful meadow where cows graze in harmony with the natural world. Another work of Hough's, entitled Quiet Time, depicts a lone fisherman and his dog in a canoe, floating on the still surface of a mountain lake, nearly enveloped by the thick early morning mist. Hough's work also includes precise, delicate renderings of flowers and birds.

Hough is a graduate of the State University of New York. Following her career in the biological sciences, she sought to express her feelings about the threat to the environment and its diversity of plants and animals. Hough turned to art for fulfillment developing a keen eye and an abundance of artistic talent. She has painted in oils for over 20 years. Hough's works have been exhibited in numerous juried shows, and her works grace private collections throughout the United States. A painting of hers was recently chosen by the American Red Cross of Oklahoma to be reproduced as a promotional poster.

Other works on display by gallery artists are executed in a multitude of styles, techniques and media. Featured are original oil paintings, watercolor and acrylic paintings, prints, sculpture, pottery, photography, weavings and reclaimed treasures. Live demonstrations by gallery artists are offered frequently in the studios.
