Brookgreen Gardens in Pawley's Island, SC, Hosts National Sculpture Exhibition

For the third year, Brookgreen Gardens in Pawley's Island, SC, is hosting the premier exhibition of the best of American sculpture. The National Sculpture Society Annual Awards Exhibition will open Aug. 31 and be on view through Oct. 27, 2002, in the Rainey Sculpture Pavilion.

Showcased will be 58 works by 58 sculptors from across the country in the 69th annual juried exhibit before moving to New York for an exhibition which will take pace from Nov. 4 through Feb. 14, 2003.

The sculptors hail from 18 states representing four corners of the country: 14 from New York; 10 from Colorado; four from Texas; three from Pennsylvania, California and Washington; two from Virginia, Missouri, Montana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Delaware and Connecticut; and one from Florida, New Mexico, Georgia and Indiana.

A total of 784 slides of work by 189 sculptors were juried by a selection jury in New York. Another jury of three will determine the prize awards, including Bob Guelich, Catherine Ferrell and another judge yet to be named.

The media of the sculpture ranges from bronze to marble and includes alabaster, porcelain, resin, bonded bronze, cold cast bronze, hydrocal, cast stone, terracotta, steel, cast glass, aluminum, multi media, and maple burlwood.

Subject matters of the eclectic exhibition include the haunting image of a breast cancer survivor entitled Survivor by Michelle Firpo-Capiello, the whimsical Beauty Scale Circa 1501-2001 by Victor Issa and the charmingly cuddly Indigo's Dream, one of wildlife sculptor Dan Ostermiller's wonderful bears.

The relationship between Brookgreen Gardens and the NSS goes back to the founding of Brookgreen. Archer Huntington was a major patron of the Society, and Anna Hyatt Huntington was one of its earliest members.

Brookgreen Gardens is located on US 17 between Myrtle Beach and Charleston, SC, and is open to the public daily. It contains the Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington Sculpture Garden, the country's first sculpture garden where more than 550 works of American sculpture are displayed throughout one of the greatest public gardens in the Southeast.

In addition, the property contains wildlife and historical exhibits that reveal the distinctive life and land of Lowcountry Carolina. Brookgreen Gardens is one of only 12 institutions in the country accredited by both the American Association of Museums and the American Zoo and Aquarium Association.
