Toe River Arts Council in Spruce Pine, NC, Presents Annual Art Auction Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003

"This could possibly be a record-breaker year for TRAC's Annual Auction, with the largest number and greatest quality of items ever contributed!" says TRAC Auction Chairman Beverly Carroll.

"Our committee has worked especially hard in hopes this will be the best party of the year! We strive for the participants to have a great time at the TRAC Auction with lots of food, refreshments, and the fun antics of our auctioneers - and of course the opportunity to purchase some beautiful artwork."

TRAC's 26th Annual Benefit Arts Auction takes place Sunday on Aug. 10, 2003, at the TRAC Center at 269 Oak Avenue in Spruce Pine, NC. With varying prices and lots of items - there's something for everyone and proceeds benefit the work of the Toe River Arts Council.

The over 200 items contributed include artwork from around 20 local glass artists, 30 potters, 12 jewelers, and several painters. Local artists and craftsmen have also donated baskets, handmade books, candles, collage, various fiber items from quilts to scarves, several hand wrought items in iron, a kaleidoscope, handmade paper art, various prints, sculpture, stained glass and various items made from wood. Some of the work is included in the Silent Auction and around 100 in the Live Auction.

The Auction gets under way at noon on Aug. 10 with the Preview Party and Silent Auction. The Silent Auction, where competitive bidding is conducted in writing, is always a popular area. Silent Auction chairwoman, Mary Foley, has lined up the Silent Auction items and it includes a lot of pottery, glass, and jewelry; and services from local businesses including a glass blowing class, a homemade cake and much more. At 1:30pm the Silent Auction closes, bidding sheets are collected and the live auction begins.

David Little, TRAC's auctioneer, begins the auctioning of the over 100 items in the live auction at 1:30pm. He plays with the crowd by amusing and delighting. After an exceptionally competitive bidding, the crowd roars and he gets a round of clapping. He's quick, and in less than two hours the Auction is over and the people are happily picking up their new acquisitions.

A free preview of the Auction will be on view through Aug. 9 at the TRAC Center. Hours are 10am-5pm and on Aug. 9 until 8pm. Visitors may leave a sealed bid during their visit if they're unable to attend the auction. There is a $10 admission on Sunday.
