Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features New Works by Susan Colwell

New works by Susan Colwell will be featured at Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, through Aug. 31, 2003.

Colwell showed an interest in art as a preschooler and thanks to a loving, but pushy stage mother, she was enrolled in classes at the Toledo Museum of Art. She had her first solo exhibition as a teenager and earned her BFA from Miami University in Oxford, OH.

Colwell had a scholarship to the University of Michigan, but when she visited the art department with her father, he found the bearded professors and undraped nude models unseemly, so he insisted she attend Miami, where curfews were in effect. Little did he know that the bearded professors and nude models were all about. "Oh the sixties!"

Colwell has had experience as an artist for several advertising agencies and worked in social work, but she never gave up painting. Painting however was not a full-time pursuit until her son Chris left for college over seven years ago. "I have such deep admiration for Eva Carter, Betty Anglin Smith and Margaret Petterson - all old friends who never wavered from their artistic goals and each has such discipline and determination."

This show consists of recent oils that try to capture the different moods of places or moments special to Colwell. Large impetuous brush strokes and juicy color typify her large impressionistic paintings. "The subject matter is never my foremost thought: I strive to capture a certain feeling in each painting. After my husband died in Dec. 2001, my work has taken a direction of its own. I am moving away from what was comfortable and familiar. I think Eva Carter would say 'It's about time'!"

Colwell is also represented by Moonshell Gallery in Hilton Head, SC, and Brazier Fine Art in Richmond, VA.
