Acercamiento Hispano De Carolina Del Sur
(South Carolina Hispanic Outreach) Announces Second Annual InspirARTE Art Expo and Silent Auction at SC State Museum in Columbia, SC, on Oct. 21, 2004

Acercamiento Hispano de Carolina del Sur (South Carolina Hispanic Outreach) will hold its second annual InspirARTE art expo and silent auction at the Vista Room of the SC State Museum in Columbia, SC, on Oct. 21, 2004 at 7pm. The goal of this project is to raise funds for the state's leading nonprofit organization providing services for Hispanic families, and also to expose the community to wonderful Latin American art.

Inspirarte is a Spanish word meaning "inspire yourself". For the InspirARTE event, many acclaimed artists and art students in Columbia and the region are studying the works of four Latin American artists. Our regional artists have "inspired themselves" by gaining insight into life in the other Americas. On Oct. 21 they will offer their work to also inspire YOU. The four Latin American master artists chosen as inspiration for our artists are: Remedios Varo (Mexico), Oswaldo Guayasamin (Ecuador), Roberto Matta (Chile), and Tomas Sanchez (Cuba).

This silent auction, offering incredible art, wine, cheese and "bocaditos" (little bites), will raise funds for Acercamiento Hispano's operating budget and programs. Proceeds will be used to enhance services to Hispanic victims of crime and to increase access to healthcare and related services for Hispanic families. Last year, InspirARTE, the first event of its kind in the state, educated participating artists and the public in general about the quality and diversity of Latin American art. More than 50 artists participated.

InspirARTE also includes a parallel educational outreach effort initiated in local schools that exposes students to Latin American art and encourages young artists. The Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia is holding a workshop on the four Latin American Master Artists for local art teachers on Aug. 28, 2004 at 9:30am. Art teachers will then hold classes on the four artists and ask their students to create original works inspired by them. Participating art students in three categories, middle school, high school, and college are competing for prizes in each category. To register call Leslie Pierce at 803/343-2208.

Comunicar, a local language and consulting service in Columbia, has provided assistance in the planning of this event on behalf of SC Hispanic Outreach. InspirARTE's Gold Sponsors this year are Doctor's Care and Bank of America.

South Carolina has one of the fastest growing Hispanic populations in the Southeast, having tripled in the last 10 years (US Census, 2000). These very hard working families make significant contributions to our overall economy and richly add to the tapestry of our community. Since 1995, Acercamiento Hispano de Carolina del Sur (SC Hispanic Outreach) has provided a critical link for these families to information, resources, services and education.
