Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Robert Sweeny

The Waterfront Gallery is pleased to introduce the works of Robert Merrill Sweeny, the newest member of the gallery, as its featured artist, on view through Aug., 31, 2005.

Although relatively new to the Charleston area, Sweeny has quickly amassed an impressive number of awards, as well as a loyal following. His work is included in collections from New York to California and can be found in the permanent collections of the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston and the Bascom-Louise Gallery in Highlands, NC, as well as numerous private collections, including that of the president of the College of Charleston. Last year, Sweeny was honored to be the first recipient of the Michael and Donna Griffith Artists Grant administered by the Coastal Community Foundation. He is also the only artist to have a two-month long one-man show at Charleston's City Gallery at Waterfront Park.

Sweeny's work is very detailed in realization, based primarily on his photographs of architectural subject matter, and executed in mixed mediums on both paper and canvas. Many of his images are from photographs taken in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico where he spends several months a year.

Sweeny holds a BFA in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design and has studied with such varied artists as Harry Callahan, Dale Chihuly, Ed Rice, Ron Pokrasso, and Rhett Thurman.
