Points of View Photography Gallery in Raleigh, NC, Features Works by Paul Dagys

Points of View Photography Gallery in Raleigh, NC, is presenting an exhibition of works by Cary, NC, photographer Paul Dagys. The exhibit will be on view from Aug. 3 through Sept. 9, 2006.

Dagys has exhibited throughout the Triangle and in New York, Georgia, and Tennessee. His photojournalism work has appeared in LIFE, Smithsonian, People, Time, Forbes, Parade, US News, USA Weekend, Newsweek, Historic Preservation, and more than 100 other periodicals.

Points of View portrays visual manifestations of the Southern identity. According to Flannery O'Connor the photographs represent beliefs and qualities "absorbed from the scriptures and from her own history of defeat and violation, a distrust of the abstract, a sense of human dependence on the grace of God, and a knowledge that evil is not simply a problem to be solved, but a mystery to be endured."

Dagys explores this notion through visiting back highways such as US 80, along the way capturing images of embellished vehicles and homes, vernacular architecture, small business signs and tombstones. He finds charm and individualistic flair in these objects lacking from modern corporate design yet expressing an essential warmth and humanity.

On a more universal level, Dagys' images are about people and places that have been around, have taken some hits, been battered and bruised yet still find humor, hope and transcendence in everyday life.
