Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, Features Works by Mandy Johnson

Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, is featuring acrylics by Mandy Johnson in a show entitled, Coastal Colors, which runs from Aug. 1 through Sept. 5, 2006. Johnson offers collectors a unique combination of sophistication and naiveté. Her work is both primitive and fine, a metaphor, perhaps, for the many contradictions found in our lives today.

Always moving, paths in her paintings lead to places caught in extreme repose - cups of coffee, cows in a field. Color is the word and only rule. Johnson, whose childhood drawings of peaches were always hot pink, started her passion early, taking inspiration from the animal menagerie on her family's Scotland Neck farm.

A college and real world art education at Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, FL, got Johnson rolling. She took a brief 20-year break to seek higher education, teach art to middle school students and to raise her own daughter under the artist's umbrella.

Since 1998, Johnson has enjoyed her passion full-time, bringing her vision to life every day - starting at 6am, when the light makes cows and cups of coffee seem more than they are.

Of Johnson's work, gallery owner Ginny Lassiter said, "I am in love with Mandy's color and styling. There are so many layers to her paintings, and such humor. She's new to Sunset River Marketplace, and I'm excited to have her work here. Mandy is a terrific addition to our other artists."

Sunset River Marketplace is one of the largest galleries in the area, and only represents artists from the Carolinas. Included in the 10,000 square-foot space is a custom framing center, two classrooms and two pottery kilns for students. Ongoing classes in oil painting, watercolor, pastel are offered, as well as children's after-school and summer programs. The gallery recently opened a second division, Sunset River Studio, which offers three- and five-day workshops by nationally and regionally known artists.
