City Art Gallery in Columbia, SC, Features Works by Tim Floyd

City Art Gallery in Columbia, SC, will present the exhibit, Oil Paintings, featuring works by Columbia artist, Tim Floyd. The exhibit opens on Sept. 4 and continues through Sept. 27, 2008.

Though Floyd incorporates traditional ideas of landscape imagery into his work, the bulk of his focus is on progressing these traditional techniques into modern times. "Years ago, painters recorded what they saw. There was a need to document as well as provide a beautiful painting. Today, we have photography to do that. I don't see a need to paint something that could be a photograph. I prefer to create something that has not been seen." And, while Floyd's work alters and abstracts the landscape, it is still recognizable as such, providing the viewer with a smooth transition into abstraction and giving the work more approachability.

Floyd's inspiration ranges from everyday life to well known artists to publications. In an effort to record his inspiration, he keeps a book filled with photographs, that he has both taken and come across, in his studio. "I can pick up my 'idea' file and be ready to paint in a matter of minutes. People inspire me. A Sunday morning sermon might inspire me," says Floyd. His reaction to inspiration is often what he uses as his motivation for a painting. Whether negative or positive, Floyd uses that energy and emotion to its fullest level in his line form, brushstrokes, color choices, and composition. He wants the viewer to feel something when looking at the work as well, and hopefully find a connection to it.

City Art represents regional artists of all mediums. Separated into three distinct galleries, City Art houses paintings, pottery, metalwork, and glass.
