Sumter has many talented artists, and a large, active artists' guild. The annual Sumter Artists' Guild show, now approaching it's 50th year, provides an opportunity for these artists to "strut their stuff". Guild members work in a variety of media: oils, watermedia, sculpture, mixed media, fiber and ceramics.

Under the guidance of 2009 guild President, Laura Cardello, The Sumter Artists' Guild has been energized with an electronic newsletter, an expanded schedule of fun events and of course interesting meetings that include a variety of speakers, demonstrations by artists and "show and tell" where guild members bring their pieces in for comments and critique.

Guild meetings are held the second Wed. of each month, Sept. through May at 7pm, upstairs at the Sumter County Gallery of Art.

Karen Watson, Director of the Sumter County Gallery of Art says, "The 2009 Sumter Artists Guild Show, like last year's, is on track to be a wonderful show because many new artists are joining the guild. This influx of new artists, coupled with the strong tradition of long time guild artists results in a fresh and diverse Sumter Artists' Guild Show a treat for art lovers in Sumter and surrounding areas. Prize money has been increased in the hopes of attracting former guild members, as well as new members to enter their art. The Sumter Artists' Guild show also offers a great opportunity to purchase high-quality art at reasonable prices".

The judge for the 2009 show is Jackie Wukela, who works in acrylics, watercolor, colored pencil, pastels, and oils. She states: "My hope is to explore the world of color and light - looking at things we see every day and recording them during a moment of magic." She is a member of The Portrait Society of America, the South Carolina Watercolor Society, and the Colored Pencil Society of America.
