Mica Gallery in Bakersville, NC, Offers Works by David Earl Tomlinson

Mica Gallery in Bakersville, NC, is presenting Tradition Revisited, featuring pieces of naturally weathered and salvaged sheet metal quilts by David Earl Tomlinson, on view through Sept. 15, 2013.

The rich patinas found in aged and weathered metals inspire this Asheville, NC, resident and self-taught metalworker. A soulful and accomplished musician, his artistry broadened to include the visual when he more deeply observed the materials he had been working with in creating signage and unique metal constructions.

These intriguing finishes challenged Tomlinson to bring found metal materials together as inspired by traditional, and eventually abstract, quilt patterns. Much like a traditional quilter, it is the scraps that guide and direct the finished piece. Tomlinson’s dynamic work hangs in private collections throughout the country. Though primarily known for his quilts, he has now added furniture to his body of work.

Mica Gallery is a cooperative of 15 local artists including Jon Ellenbogen and Becky Plummer, Kent, McLaughlin, Suze Lindsay, Gertrude Graham Smith, Cynthia Bringle, David Ross, Joy Tanner, William Baker, Claudia Dunaway, Jenny Lou Sherburne, Jacque Allen, Chuck Young and Deana Blanchard, Pam Brewer, and Joerling. On display and available for sale are a stunning variety of functional and sculptural ceramics, glass, wood, prints, and paintings each touched by the unique mark of its maker.
