Associated Artists of Winston-Salem Features Exhibit in Conjunction with Davis Cup Competition

Associated Artists Of Winston-Salem, in Winston-Salem, NC, is pleased to announce Art & Tennis: A Great Match! Backhands and brushstrokes will both be in top form Sept. 21 - 23 during the Davis Cup World group qualifying round. Works of art in the shape of giant tennis racquets will be strung all over this tennis-loving city of the arts during the Davis Cup weekend. Tennis fans and art aficionados have been having a ball dressing up the town with the art racquets to welcome Patrick McEnroe, Patrick Rafter, Billie Jean King, members of the international press and other visitors for the US vs. India competition. The racquets will hang around town outdoors and inside public buildings.

Flow Motors is sponsoring the project as a promotion for the Davis Cup. and has been working with AAWS to carry out the details. Flow Motors provided 6 - foot and 8 - foot racquet-shaped plywood cutouts painted white and AAWS lined up the creative power. Interested artists picked up the basic racquets from the AAWS gallery in the Sawtooth Building downtown, took them to their homes and studios and let their creative juices flow.

Artists painted the racquets, attached objects to them and generally transformed them into a fascinating variety of rich, colorful and stimulating works. One artist put sunglasses on a racquet; another turned one into a fountain. Artists and groups who are turning out racquets include fine artists, sign painters, interior designers, architects, writers, teachers, meeting planners, shop keepers, art teachers, school children, art galleries, community leaders, Diggs Gallery Reynolda House, SECCA, Delta Fine Arts, the Sawtooth Center for Visual Art, the Children's Theatre of Winston-Salem and Piedmont Opera Theatre.

Organizers are planning a celebration to recognize the art racquets and their creators.

Flow Motors operates several car dealerships in Winston-Salem and is a leader in community benevolence.
