City Art in Columbia, SC, Features Works by Preston Orr

City Art in Columbia, SC, announces a solo show of new works by Preston Orr in the Main Gallery from Sept. 4 - 29, 2001.

Raised in Columbia and based in Savannah, GA, (where he received his MFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 1998), Orr is known for his experimental use of materials - hay and dirt, epoxy resin and fiber-glass, for example, and for his ability to capture moments of a narrative in a particular place. Orr's work deals with desire and ritual, balanced in an aesthetic between prehistoric and modern. Critic Jane Grau in the Sept. 26, 1999 issue of The Charlotte Observer wrote, "Orr's multimedia paintings demonstrate an understanding of the past that is far more sophisticated than his actual years, in the sense that he's an astute observer of what happens to the material world over time."

The exhibit at City Art will showcase many large works on fiberglass, several smaller three-dimensional pieces, some works on paper that incorporate caviar and polyurethane, and some twelve pieces made of yarn and resin on the surface of school lunch trays. Some of his new work explores the motif of what he calls "a true line" and "a false line," metaphorical expressions of the artist's ongoing interest in issues of sin and redemption.

Preston Orr has been well-received in Savannah with solo shows at several venues. He has participated in many group and juried exhibitions, including Selections from SCAD at the Broome Street Gallery in New York City and the Jewels of the South exhibit at the Sarah Bain Gallery in Fullerton, CA. In 2000, after a highly competitive juried process, Orr's work was selected for the Southern Edition of New American Paintings. His work is also in many public and private collections.
