Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Shows Sculptures of Albert Paley

Jerald Melberg Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is proud to present its first solo exhibition for the world-renowned metalsmith Albert Paley Sept. 15 through Nov. 3, 2001.

Active as an artist for over 25 years, Albert Paley is the first metal sculptor to receive the coveted Institute Honors Award from the American Institute of Architects, the AIA's highest award to a non-architect. "The allure of Paley's art comes though its intrinsic sense of integration of art and architecture", as one noted architect stated. His experiments with iron and steel illustrate intriguing contradictions of movement and rigidity. Indeed, Paley has said that it is the dichotomous nature of these materials that initially attracted and fascinated him. Testaments to Paley's extraordinary talent are tables, lamps, and sculptural pieces adorned with seemingly impossible ribbons of steel.

Paley will be interviewed on Charlotte Talks with Mike Collins, on Sept. 14 at 9am on WFAE 90.7 FM in Charlotte.

Works by Paley can be found in the permanent collections of many major museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston; the Mint Museum of Craft + Design in Charlotte; the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston; and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Broadly published and an international lecturer, Paley received both his BFA and MFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Rochester in 1989. Recently he received the Citation for Distinguished Service in the Visual Arts from the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).
