The Artist's Co-op in Laurens, SC, to Serve the Community
Finding it increasingly difficult to locate
suitable venues to exhibit their work in Laurens County, Upstate,
South Carolina, several artists are banding together to open an
Artist's Co-operative. Opening the doors on Sept. 16, the gallery
and studio will be situated at 101 South Street, on Historic Laurens
Square in Laurens, SC.
The art buying public will be able to purchase quality work including
paintings in all medium, ceramics, sculpture and jewelry. In the
future it is planned to showcase specific artists on a monthly
basis, hold art and craft markets, art clinics and demonstrations,
exhibitions of children's art, poetry readings and more.
The founding board members (Hazel Mitchell, Gail Cormier, BJ Turner, Jane Compton, Linda Cancel), have had their breath taken away by the response from local people. "It's incredible to think that we only started talking about this at the end of July. The enthusiasm from artists and the public alike is amazing! There is obviously a great interest in the arts in the more rural areas of South Carolina that isn't being addressed." says Chairman, Hazel Mitchell, an artist originally from England.
And addressing this interest is just what they
hope to do. There will be exhibition space available to members
and the co-op will be a centre of information; a gathering place
for artists in the locality, run by volunteer members.
The gallery is looking to represent artists in Laurens and surrounding
counties on a nonprofit basis. A small contribution will be payable
on a monthly basis to cover the expenses of running the facility
and the co-op will also accept consignment work.
