Med Deli in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Charlie McAlister & Kim Alsbrooks

Through Sept. the Med Deli in Charleston, SC, is exhibiting Dana Rangled, a show of large format paintings on paper by artists, Charlie McAlister and Kim Alsbrooks.

McAlister is a SC native who attended the Chicago Art Institute. A multi-media artist, he is best known for his challenging performance art. With this work, his painting style lends rambling text and often darkly expressive figures.

Alsbrooks, a Charleston native, attended the San Francisco Art Institute. She lends a more academic approach to the paintings, "I find myself looking to tighten and balance the paintings. Sort of. I also tend to add textile, collage and patterning."

The collaborative process results in a gain of something entirely new so "Dana Rangled became the alias for the artists who have been working together for almost two years. The name is derived from the word "wrangled" which means to achieve or get by stubborn arguing. "Actually, we find it refreshing. It is an act of trust to be able to let go of what is put down and be open to transformation." The artists work on large ads, sometimes as long as 14 feet, salvaged from downtown storefronts. The original graphics are transformed, transcribed and sometimes completely worked over in the process.
