UNC-Charlotte in Charlotte, NC, Features Exhibit of Digital Works by Arthur Liou

UNC-Charlotte's Cone Center's Main Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is presenting an exhibition entitled, Picture(s), featuring works by Arthur Liou, on view through Oct. 6, 2002.

Liou is currently an Assistant Professor and Area Coordinator - Digital Media at the Henry Radford School of Fine Arts, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN. He received his MFA in Photography/Electronic Media from the University of Florida, Gainesville. He also studied at The American Photography Institution, New York City, NY, Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah, GA and the National Chengchi University, Taipei, Taiwan. Liou is a permanent resident who was born in Taiwan.

Works on display at the Cone Center are Iris and Archival Ink jet prints on canvas of images reconstructed from childhood memories of family pictures from vacations where Liou by "narrowing his eyes" projects himself back to the time and place of the original photograph. "Then my memory would be flipped on and start to run like video or film. The images are filtered with gleaming scans or fluffy, grainy flickers. They are vivid but also fuzzy, the same when you get too close to a screen," says Liou.

The texture of the image stream has become another kind of memory constructed by his overall movie-going or tv-watching experience. Under the appearance of video or film, this memory is woven by the routine episodes of news and spectacle. Liou says, "From traumatizing disaster to glorified celebration, I engage my senses and emotion while being saddened or cheered. These scenes then are sent to the past and dissipate into another generic layer, an afterimage that will join the meshes of my video memory."
