Winthrop University Galleries in Rock Hill, SC, Opens 2003-04 Season with Untitled Projects

Winthrop University Galleries in Rock Hill, SC, opens its 2003-04 season with Untitled Projects, a series of four artist residencies and exhibitions which will be on display consecutively through Oct. 31, 2003. Artists included in the one-week residencies are Tim Hussey, Brad Thomas, Heather Johnson, and E Chen. The first exhibition, Untitled Project #1, is being presented in the Elizabeth Dunlap Patrick Gallery and continues through Sept. 26, 2003 with Tim Hussey's illustrations.

Untitled Project #1

For the past 11 years Charleston, SC, native Tim Hussey has worked as an illustrator, designer, instructor, and painter. Starting in 1992 as a set designer for MTV, his paintings were shown on air as live performance. He went on to do editorial illustration for clients ranging from Ray-Gun to The New York Times to Rolling Stone magazine. In 1994 he began art directing for magazines like Musician, GQ, Outside and Icon. Hussey has received numerous awards and recognition for his work including American Illustration, Print Magazine, Society of Illustrators, and Communication Arts. He also received the "Top 20 Images of the Year" award from American Illustration/2001. Hussey will be on campus creating a large scale illustration. He will present a lecture about his work on Sept. 1 at 8pm in Rutledge 119.

Untitled Project #2

Brad Thomas is a mixed media and installation artist currently living and working in Charlotte, NC. He is the recipient of both a North Carolina Arts Council Visual Artist Fellowship and New Works Grant. In 2000 the Contemporary Art Museum of Raleigh and the North Carolina Museum of Art commissioned him to design and produce multi-media installations. In 2002 he was voted by the writers of Creative Loafing as Charlotte's Best Artist. His work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in the United States and abroad. Thomas' exhibition opens in the Rutledge Gallery Sept. 15 and continues through Oct. 3, 2003. He will arrive for his residency Sept. 15 with only the clothes on his back. During his stay on campus through Sept. 19, he anticipates that all of his living needs, including food, will be supplied through donations from Winthrop and the local community. While on campus he will also produce a new work of art that will also depend upon materials that are collected in Rutledge Gallery for his use.

Untitled Project #3

Through a partnership with Charlotte's McColl Center for Visual Art, Winthrop University Galleries will also bring San Francisco-based Heather Johnson and Los Angeles-based E Chen to the Rock Hill campus for exhibitions and week-long residencies. Johnson holds an MFA in photography from California College of Arts and Crafts in San Francisco and a BA from the University of Maryland. Her work explores fragments of the familiar and investigates the spaces "between" physical and psychological distances. Johnson employs photography, embroidery and text to explore concepts of time, distance and alienation. Her work has been shown in Baltimore; Washington, DC; San Francisco; and Japan. Johnson's exhibition opens in the Elizabeth Dunlap Patrick Gallery on Oct. 6 and continues through Oct. 31, 2003. Her residency is scheduled for Oct. 6 - 10. Johnson will present a lecture on Oct. 6 at 8pm in Rutledge 119.

Untitled Project #4

E Chen holds a Masters in Architecture form the University of California, Berkeley, and an MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles. Born in Taiwan, Chen initially pursued a career in architecture in the United States. After one year with an architectural firm, his true passion for sculpture was realized. Chen sees sculpture as a medium that relates to space and society on a personal level. His works are a detailed investigation of existing and imagined environments. He is concerned with analyzing the way social conventions dictate the way people use space, objects, and events. Chen's exhibition opens in Rutledge Gallery Oct. 13 and continues through Oct. 31, 2003. Chen's residency is scheduled for Oct. 13 - 17. He will present a slide lecture on Oct. 13 at 8pm in Rutledge 119.

Untitled Projects is funded in part by the Elizabeth Dunplap Patrick Gallery Endowment.
