Conn Gallery in Landrum, SC, Offers Works by Stephen Chesley

From Sept. 4 through Oct. 28, 2004, the Conn Gallery in Landrum, SC, will host an exhibit of works by Stephen Chesley. Stunning Landscapes of the South: Stephen Chesley combines his impressive talent and intuition with his empathy for nature to create strong scenes from the Lowcountry and the foothills. Growing up in Virginia Beach, he remembers receiving pastels and charcoal from his grandmother and aunt at four years of age. The seed was planted and Chesley grew up drawing and painting and never stopped.

Chesley attended East Carolina University then switched to Virginia Commonwealth to study city planning and mapping, which incorporated his drawing. After graduating he found it hard to break into city work and did construction and plumbing jobs to make a living. He then attended Clemson University school of Architecture and received his MA in 1980. Chesley's own artwork eventually won over all his other talents and he began exhibiting in galleries and juried shows throughout the southeast.

Painting landscapes, of both the Lowcountry and the foothills, Chesley uses abstraction in his work, even though the paintings are read figuratively. Some key mentors and influences in Chesley's work are Albert Pinkham Ryder, Franz Kline, Edward Hopper and George limes.

Chesley's paintings show his extreme talent in the variety of media he uses. The skies are true skies, layered with clouds and color. The forests and fields immediately place you in your neighbor's farm or your friend's wood lot. Please come and view these exquisite scenes of nature and life.
