Center of the Earth Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Page H. Laughlin

Center of the Earth Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present the exhibition, The Interior Series, featuring works by Page H. Laughlin from Sept. 3 through Oct. 31, 2004.

Laughlin's paintings of interiors are compelling illusions of the fantasy and desires of popular culture. This ongoing series is inspired by a variety of high end luxury magazines that promote materialist beauty through interior design. Laughlin's densely layered paintings are reminiscent of the post impressionist technique of meticulous interpretation of light into color juxtaposition.

From a distance, forms unify into cohesive images. Upon closer inspection, color and form optically dissolve into passages of painterly tactile richness. This expressive approach creates an ambiguous tension between the physical and the conceptual. The suggestion of Reality vs. Illusion beckons us to examine our own responses to this dualism.

Laughlin received her MFA from Rhode Island School of Design and is Professor of Painting at Wake Forest University. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and institutions across the US, including the Duke Museum of Art and the North Carolina Museum of Art, and is in numerous private collections.

"Page Laughlin's work fuses a psychological, felt reality with a more literal, visual one. Her plush interiors expose the shallowness of consumer culture while simultaneously acknowledging its allure. For all their bravura, Laughlin's paintings are laced with melancholy; abundance coexists with - even fosters - unsatisfied longings. Elegantly paradoxical, these renderings provide knowing commentary on contemporary media-fed aspirations," said Huston Paschal, Associate Curator of Modern Art, North Carolina Museum of Art.
