SOLO Art Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, Features Works by David Nance

David Nance: New Works, a solo exhibition featuring his recent oil paintings, will open at SOLO Art Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC. on Sept. 10, 2004. Nance is an amazingly versatile and skilled painter and will be exhibiting a wide variety of works at the gallery through Oct. 23, 2004. Paintings will include Nance's signature skyscapes, Carolina mountain and coastal landscapes, European scenes, abstracts and florals.

Nance is a native of North Carolina where he and his wife paint full time. His interest in art began as a child and continued with many contemporary masters including Eleanor Seng, Clyde Fowler, Jim Starret, and Daniel Greene. He was formally educated at North Carolina State University's School of Design. His paintings have been represented in many juried shows and select exhibitions, attaining best of show and awards of excellence. Many of his paintings are in private and corporate collections.

Either in his studio or plein air painting in a variety of locations, Nance creates landscapes and still-life paintings with expressive brushstrokes and layers of color. You can see the development in the painting, giving weight to color interaction, pattern and movement. His techniques vary depending upon subject and the feelings he wants to express. He paints in a direct expressive style, establishing base colors and shape relationships and then developing the light and shade to the forms.

As Nance states, "I draw my inspiration from the joy and challenge in learning to see and paint the subtlety found in nature. I focus on the familiar to share my compassion for what and how I express my subjects. I want someone to take another look at what they might generally take for granted by what is suggested rather than spelled out. It is important to have the viewer see the use of the paint, in the brushstrokes or the subtleties in the values and the texture of the canvas."

"I think the secret to anyone's energy is doing what you love - something you lose yourself in. I paint for the love of painting and when others respond to my work I have shared this compassion."
