Tessera Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, Features Works by Weston Hammond

In Winston-Salem, NC, Weston Hammond, an artist involved in the local arts scene for more than 20 years, will unveil a new exhibit at Tessera Gallery. Lost and Found will feature new works inspired by Hammond's journey to Spain, as well as his recent experiences within the US. The exhibit will be on display from Sept. 3-30, 2004.

Hammond is a familiar presence in Winston-Salem. He received the Emerging Artist Grant from the Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County in 1993, and has exhibited his work at such places as SECCA, the Sawtooth Center, the Vintage Theatre, Art Gallery Originals, the John Snow Gallery, the Rainbow Café, and the Chamber of Commerce. However, several years ago, Hammond began to feel both spiritually and emotionally lost in his life and art. This prompted him to journey to Spain to launch a form ofjoumey of self-discovery.

"When I left for Spain, I had every intention of continuing with impressionistic landscapes. When I arrived, I was so taken by the juxtaposition of the old and the new, and of man and nature, that my work truly took on a new form. I was especially fascinated by man and nature and the influences that each has on the other. Before I knew it, my work had become more abstract," says Hammond.

While in Spain, Hammond embarked on a pilgrimage trail, which led to his greatest moments of reflection and self-discovery. Hammond comments, "It was through this intense physical journey that I was able to journey into myself. These physical and mental adventures were the inspiration for the images that I created in Spain and continue to produce."

These works, ranging from marble sculpture to constructed pieces using found objects to acrylic paint on canvas, will comprise the exhibit at Tessera Gallery. Visitors will be able to view the change in Hammond's art - the move from impressionistic landscapes to abstracts - as a result of his journeys.

"We are looking forward to Weston's exhibit in September," says Russell Scott, co-owner of Tessera Gallery. "Weston is a truly gifted artist - a form of Renaissance man who is able to create in almost any genre, from sculpture to collage to traditional canvas. The changes in his work as a result of his trip to Spain are striking."

The gallery will feature abstract works by Russell Scott in Oct., and Fused and Painted Glass and Jewelry by Sleepin' Dog's Nancy Greever Brooks in Nov.
