Art in the Park in Greenville, SC, Takes Place on Sept. 15 & 16, 2007

The 17th annual Art in the Park festival will take place in Greenville, SC's, historic West End District on South Main Street from Broad Street to Camperdown Way, on Sept. 15 & 16, 2007. Organizers are expecting 15,000 visitors to come and enjoy the 2007 festival.

This year's Art in the Park festival will include 70 booth artists; 16 fence artists will be at the Greenville News Plaza; an annual juried exhibition and competition, a plein air competition; a silent auction, and many art activities for all ages.

For the past 16 years Art in the Park has sought to further the mission of Upstate Visual Arts by publicly celebrating the vast talent of visual artists across the Southeast. Beginning in 1992 at Cleveland Park the Festival has been a promising event for enriching the Upstate's culture and a promising venue for local artists. In 2000 AIP moved to the Governor's School of Art. Four years later it moved into Falls Park until this year when it will be held on South Main Street, extending from the Broad Street to Camperdown Way.

This year Art in the Park is proud to present 70 booth artists, 1/3 of which are new to the arts festival. There will be a great variety of mediums represented by these artists: 18 painters, 4 glass artisans, 5 textile artists, 14 potters, 5 photographers, 5 mixed medium artists, 15 jewelry makers, 2 woodworkers and 3 metal workers.

This year's Fence Show features 16 artists displaying inside of four different tents with four artists per tent. All artists in the Fence Show will be new to the festival.

This year's juried exhibition will be located amongst the festivities of Art in the Park at Larkin's by the River in the Founder's Room. The exhibition will feature thirteen awards to be given. The Best of Show Award will be awarded regardless of the category the artist uses. A First Place, Second Place, Third Place, and Sponsors award will be awarded in three different categories, Two Dimensional, Three Dimensional, and Digital/Photography.

One of the most exciting events will be a plein air competition, meaning a style of painting produced out of doors in natural light, taking place on Sept. 15, between 10am to 5:15pm. Artists will draw numbers at 9:30am to determine their painting zones and have to turn in their completed works by 5:15pm. The winner will be announced at 6pm. The works will be on display at the Demonstrations Tent on Sept. 16 for a silent auction. The proceeds from the auction will be split between the artist and UVA with the artist receiving 70%. Here's a chance to watch art being created - right before your eyes.

The Festival will also present four stations with each station having an activity representing a different Master Artist: Matisse, Seurat, Picasso and Pollock. Each station will also have examples of each master artist's work; one large image to attach on the front of each table and smaller copies for children to reference while working.

The Matisse Station offers - Paint & Paper Collage. Children will use paint in primary colors and cut paper shapes in secondary colors. First they can glue the cut out shapes to the page and then add paint. On a white sheet of paper they can combine these elements to create an image.

The Seurat Station offers - Q-tip Painting (Pointillism) with Stencils. Children may select one or more stencils to place on a sheet of paper. (secure with masking tape) Children will then paint with Q-tips inside the stencil and then fill in the background.

The Picasso Station offers - Precut Instrument Shapes (violin, mandolin, guitar, banjo). Children can color in earth tones, cut into strips and glue in sequence onto a white sheet of paper. Add additional background color with pencils and/or crayons.

The Pollock Station offers - Action Painting. Children create a large mural with brushes, brooms, mops, etc. They will brush, flick, drip and house paint on a large canvas placed on the ground. The finished canvas will then be displayed.

Several other organizations will also be represented at Art in the Park including: Greenville Woodworkers, South Carolina Gourd Society, Upper South Carolina Basket Guild, Senior Action Group & Kudzu Arts Guild.

Upstate Visual Arts was created in 1987 as a continuation of the 1930's organization The Greenville Arts Guild to promote its mission of enhancing the quality of life within the community by elevating the stature of visual art and educating the public to its significance through high-quality exhibitions, classes, and workshops. Upstate Visual Arts seeks to provide a venue of expression, education, and community for new, emerging, and under-represented Upstate artists. A monthly free lecture series, Artist Hour, is held for the public and artists to educate about the visual arts and provide information. Upcoming events are featured on the UVA webpage, and in the newsletter, entitled The Vision, which is sent out quarterly. Both avenues offer detailed information on upcoming events. Membership can be obtained through our website or by picking up a membership form from our office located at 701 Pendleton Street.
