September Issue 2007

Hand in Hand Gallery in Flat Rock, NC, Features Group Exhibit

Hand in Hand Gallery in Flat Rock, NC, is presenting the exhibit, Smoke & Mirrors: The Magic of Photographic Art and Raku Fired Clay, on view through Oct. 7, 2007.

Photography has been established as an art form since Edward Steichen and Alfred Stieglitz founded the "Little Galleries of the Photo Secession" in New York in 1905. Steichen was a frequent visitor to Flat Rock, as his sister, Lillian was married to Carl Sandburg whose home, Connemara, is still a magnet for visitors to Flat Rock. Today photographers in the area carry on the quest for artistic expression using a multitude of different techniques and visions as is apparent in this exhibit.

Werner Bonitz

Werner Bonitz's celebration of color is evident in the dramatic, graphic works he creates with a Mamiya 645 camera that produces a negative nearly three times larger than a 35mm digital or film negative. By processing and printing his own images, he has complete control over the final picture. Other exhibiting photographers are Mary Vogel, Susan Isley, Susan Mehiel, Susan Stanton, Jeff Miller, Mary Jo Brezny, Tim Lewis, Curt Goodfellow, Carol Weeks, Leigh Svenson, and Andrea Williams.

American raku pottery is based on a Japanese technique and is a unique and magical form of pottery where the glowing hot vessel or sculpture is pulled from the kiln and placed with combustible materials in a metal container. The can is then covered, smothering the flames. The results are always serendipitous and the pieces are truly one of a kind.

Steven Forbes-de Soule

Steven Forbes-deSoule has been focusing on raku pottery exclusively for over 23 years and has created a style which is genuinely distinct. Recently he has been melting stained glass and glass rods on his "halo/opal" glaze, creating a variety of colors and textures. Other raku artists include David Voorhees, Penny Truitt, Courtney Tomchik, Jeff Hamilton, Jan Lee and Les Powell.
