Hickory Museum of Art in Hickory, NC, Features Glass Exhibition

The Hickory Museum of Art in Hickory, NC, is presenting contemporary glass work in the Objects Gallery through Apr. 20, 2008. The exhibition, Born of Fire: Glass from the Museum's Luski Collection, will consist of modern glass art pieces from the Museum's permanent collection, most of which were donated by Isaac and Sonia Luski, and Abraham and Rose Luski. Born of Fire will consist of 72 glass pieces created by innovative modern glass artists including Ken Carder, Stephen Dee Edwards and Jon Kuhn.

Isaac and Sonia Luski have been collecting contemporary art since they moved to the South in 1960 - a pastime that began back in their native island of Cuba. Although most well-known for their passion for art glass, they also collect ceramics, textiles, metal, wood, works on paper and paintings from well-known, as well as emerging artists and students. They are frequent visitors to the esteemed Penland School of Crafts, where they have made donations and helped in the discovery of many talented local artists.

Abraham and Rose Luski are also contributors to the Museum. Abraham is the brother and business partner of Isaac who also came to the United States in 1960 with his wife and currently resides in Charlotte, NC. Abraham credits his contribution to HMA to Blowing Rock, NC, artist Herb Cohen, who served as a board member of the Museum.

"They [the Luskis] are very good friends," said world-renown artist Jon Kuhn who met the Luskis 19 years ago when they sought him out. Kuhn's pieces are on permanent display in 35 museums worldwide from New York to Switzerland.

Other artists include Mark Peiser, the first Penland School of Crafts Artist-in-Residence. Peiser began studying art glass before much of the development that is part of the field today. "When I started doing glass, there weren't a lot of options out there nobody knew how to do it. Nobody knew the tools or the materials, nobody knew the processes," said Peiser in Looking Within: Mark Peiser The Art of Glass catalog for his Asheville Art Museum exhibition (Dec. 18, 2003 Mar. 2, 2004).
