in Charlotte, NC, Offers Contemporary Mosaic Exhibit

Ciel Gallery, located in the historic SouthEnd area of Charlotte, NC, will present an exhibition of the best and brightest of international contemporary mosaic art, on view from Sept. 4 through Oct. 23, 2009.
Juried by Master Mosaicist Giulio Menossi of Udine, Italy, the exhibition features work in both traditional and contemporary styles by artists from 18 US states as well as Italy, Serbia, Monaco, Wales, Canada, and Ireland.

"The art of mosaic has been practiced for at least 3500 years, and consists of precise cutting and fitting of hundreds of small pieces of glass or stone to create a design," said Menossi, a thirty-five year veteran of the art. "I believe that the slow, painstaking mosaic process exposes our personal stories. The difficulties of the journey follow the lines of the glass, where each tessera represents a new encounter, where hues and shades harmonize into new colors. The shapes too close to our noses don't allow us to recognize the vision as a whole, which we only discover by taking several steps backward and looking with fresh eyes."
